Join EarthMind and Iowa City neighbors in a yard featured in the book “Low-Maintenance Eco Gardens” and home to co-author Jen Kardos. We’ll explore how to thoughtfully integrate trees and shrubs into an already abundant space filled with fruit trees, berry bushes, vegetables, and herbs. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to: Choose the right location based on sunlight, soil, walkways, and spacing; protect plants from deer and rabbits; and avoid common placement mistakes that lead to crowding or extra work. This program is free and open to the public. Details and sign-up here.
Saturday, May 30, 10 a.m.-noon
BACKYARD REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS. Glendale Park, 1250 E. Jefferson St., Iowa City. Iowa is home to remarkable reptiles and amphibians like gray tree frogs, northern leopard frogs, chorus frogs, painted turtles, snapping turtles, garter snakes, fox snakes, brown snakes, and even the striking five-lined skink. These creatures help control pests, balance ecosystems, and signal the health of our land – yet they often go unnoticed. During this hands-on class, led by Extant Relatives founder Melinda Licht, you’ll learn how to make your yard, patio, or neighborhood green space more welcoming to these wild neighbors. During the first half of the class we will meet Iowa’s common species and understand their needs; in the second half, we will create toad or frog houses to take home. Price range: $5 to $30. Details and registration here.
